NYC house hunting trip failure… sort of.

September 7, 2009 – 11:09 pm

This past weekend I took a trip to NYC with the ambitious goal of locking down a place to live for when I move out there in October. I knew that finding a place to live in just three days wouldn’t be an easy task, but I’ve done it before, so why couldn’t I do it again?

Unfortunately, Craigslist and I weren’t in sync this past weekend.

In short, I didn’t find a place to live. However, I’m pretty sure I decided on a neighborhood. Before taking the trip, I was pretty much set on Brooklyn, but wasn’t sure between Williamsburg and Park Slope. After wandering aimlessly in both for several hours, I’m almost certain that Park Slope is where I want to end up, if I can afford it. Williamsburg definitely had a cool vibe, but Park Slope just felt like the better fit for me.

So I wouldn’t consider my house hunting trip a complete failure; I now know where to focus my search.

I also managed to beat the lines at the Shake Shack in Manhattan on Sunday. In-n-out has got nothin’ on Shake Shack.

  2. Based on Street View, I think you made the right decision between Park Slope and Williamsburg. I still love In-n-Out, but Shake Shack looks pretty awesome. Those fries look really good (I’m not a fan of In-n-Out’s dry fries), and they serve beer! Nice.

  3. Yes, the fries were very very good. People will wait in line for over an hour at this place. Luckily, I went at like 4:45pm and just beat the rush.

  4. heya, jim here (friend of laura w and fellow TC alum). i live in park slope, and highly recommend it. when i found my place, i set up four places to check out beforehand via craigslist and took one weekend to visit all four before making a decision – it is possible to find a good place for under $800 if you look carefully. i sublet a room in a 4br apartment which comes to around $750, and it’s right next to prospect park.

    good luck with yr hunt!

  5. Mike, live near Park Slope, one of my great friends from college lives in the Park Slope area, if you land in that area I can let him know. He will definitely hang out and show you the ropes etc. and that would make it easier for me to hit two birds, one stone when I go and visit (which I try to do with some frequency).
